The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

Saturday, February 17, 2007

Yesterday I bought this book by Stephen Covey, that I've had recommended so many times.

habit 1 - be proactive
This is the ability to control one's environment, rather than have it control you, as is so often the case. Self determination, choice, and the power to decide response to stimulus, conditions and circumstances

habit 2 - begin with the end in mind
Covey calls this the habit of personal leadership - leading oneself that is, towards what you consider your aims. By developing the habit of concentrating on relevant activities you will build a platform to avoid distractions and become more productive and successful.

habit 3 - put first things first
Covey calls this the habit of personal management. This is about organising and implementing activities in line with the aims established in habit 2. Covey says that habit 2 is the first, or mental creation; habit 3 is the second, or physical creation.

habit 4 - think win-win
Covey calls this the habit of interpersonal leadership, necessary because achievements are largely dependent on co-operative efforts with others. He says that win-win is based on the assumption that there is plenty for everyone, and that success follows a co-operative approach more naturally than the confrontation of win-or-lose.

habit 5 - seek first to understand and then to be understood
One of the great maxims of the modern age. This is Covey's habit of communication, and it's extremely powerful. Covey helps to explain this in his simple analogy 'diagnose before you prescribe'. Simple and effective, and essential for developing and maintaining positive relationships in all aspects of life.

habit 6 - synergize
Covey says this is the habit of creative co-operation - the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, which implicitly lays down the challenge to see the good and potential in the other person's contribution.

habit 7 - sharpen the saw
This is the habit of self renewal, says Covey, and it necessarily surrounds all the other habits, enabling and encouraging them to happen and grow. Covey interprets the self into four parts: the spiritual, mental, physical and the social/emotional
, which all need feeding and developing.

Jazzing up my home with flowers

Being sick and all that, I decided to find some nice flowers to jazz up the flat, and to cheer me up.
So I bought this fantastic nice orchid. Furthermore I got some branches, they are supposed to bloom with sweet pink flowers. Isn't it just nice??
If you want to listen to some music while enjoying the flowers, I can warmly recommend Nat King Cole with Unforgettable, When I fall in Love and Autumn Leaves.

Perfect illness cure

Thursday, February 15, 2007

Waking up today with a headache, sore throat and snotty like hell. I guess it's high season for that at the moment. Fortunately I have found the cure.
It's one litre of water (cold or warm) mixed with as much you have or can cope with of ginger, garlic, lemon/citron and chili. It's not very tasty, but it actually does help you to recover relatively quick ... Bon appetite!

Fight Global Warming from your Desktop

Thursday, February 8, 2007

With this programme you can save energy on your computer.

"More than 30 billion kilowatt-hours of energy is wasted because many of us simply forget to shut down our computers when we’re not using them. If we could just improve the efficiency of how we use our PCs, the savings in energy costs would be over $3 billion dollars! The CO2 emissions from just 15 computers are equivalent in energy terms to the gas consumption used by one car"

GLOBAL WARMING - What You Can Do!!

Monday, February 5, 2007

Global warming is a fact that no longer can be ignored. We have all, more or less, contributed to the CO2 emission, and as a consequence thereof we must all take action now and pull together to make it better, or at least to prevent it getting worse. There is no excuse...
YOU DO make a difference.
Read below to see what you can do! And do it...

  • Buy energy-saving appliances. Look for the “ENERGY STAR” label when you shop.
  • Install efficient shower heads. Or at least clean your older shower head to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and water use
  • Lower the temperature in your hot water tank to 120 degrees.
  • Insulate your home, hot water heater, and all water pipes.
Recycle cans, bottles, paper, plastic, and newspapers to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. If your community doesn’t offer recycling services, request them.
  • Buy products that are made of recycled materials. Including recycled paper for your printer.
  • Keep car tires inflated. This cuts down on fuel costs, unnecessary emissions, and lengthens the life of your tires
  • If buying a new car, invest in a hybrid. If you live in a city and do a lot of stop-and-go driving, the new hybrids are a great way to help cut back on emissions.
  • Plant deciduous trees around your home to increase shade and lower carbon amounts. Reforestation – even in your own back yard – is one of the best ways to balance your personal emissions.
  • Invest in “Green Power” for electricity in your home. See www.epa.gov/greenpower for more information

I'm starting with some magazine reading and a cup of coffee, after that I go to the gym to do 1 hour body toning, and now...? I have no idea but I'm up for just about anything... Saturday is definiteley my day.
